Lulu TV is the video section of the self-publishing site Lulu.com created by former Red Hat's co-founder Bob Young. As part of the network, it shares the same principle: contents should be free to spread. So Lulu TV has engineered a model for paying content providers. Creatives ("shareholders") pay $14.95 a month; 80 per cent of the total payments go into a pool. The pool is split up at the end of the month, with each contributor receiving a share of the pool based on his or her share of the total viewings of the videos on the site.

The business model has since evolved. It's now free to become a shareholder. At the end of every month, Lulu TV keeps 20 percent of the advertising revenue it books and then divides the remaining 80 percent amongst its shareholders. The percentage of the loot is based on the percentage of the site's viewers you've attracted with your content. The site says that the monthly pool will be at least $5,000.
